Spectators can tune into Wrexham Town Police Station FC’s debut fixture online this weekend

Spectators will be able to tune in online to watch Wrexham Town Police Station FC’s debut fixture at Colliers Park this weekend.

The officers of the newly formed team will face community side Bellevue FC in a 10.30am kick-off on January 22, with the friendly match to be played on the site’s 3G pitch.

And while spectators will be unable to attend on the day, they can take in the match from the comfort of their home courtesy of the digital broadcast.

Comprising male and female players, the police side has been created in a bid to build cohesion between officers and the communities they serve.

Though disappointed that there will be no crowd in attendance, Sgt Dave Smith is delighted that the game will reach a wider audience.

He said: “It would have been great to have people here watching our first game, but the lifting of Welsh COVID restrictions for crowds came a little late for us to plan for the numbers that might turn up.

“Streaming the game is a great alternative and potentially allows a lot more people to take in the game.

“As officers we want to improve our relationship with the communities we serve and break down any misconceptions people might have about the police.

“This is a great platform to help us achieve that aim. It’s a match we’re all looking forward to and we can’t wait to get out there and play at a fantastic venue.”

Bellevue FC’s work within the community took another step forward recently when the club agreed to become stakeholders for Wrexham’s UK City of Culture Bid 2025.

This announcement follows on from the club’s award-winning inclusivity work with people from adverse backgrounds, as well as refugees, asylum seekers, and economic migrants.

Film crews from S4C will be present for the game, along with the FAW President, Steve Williams, and Wrexham Mayor Cllr Ronnie Prince -who will be watching on from the touchline.

Funding for the live stream has come from Wrexham’s UK City of Culture 2025 bid. The competition uses culture to ‘level up’ areas of the UK, bringing increased productivity and opportunities to the winning region.
