An elderly woman has been airlifted to hospital following a serious collision on the A55 earlier this morning.

The incident was reported to officers at approximately 11.30 today, Friday 4 September, and involved three vehicles, a white DAF HGV, a white ford transit van and a beige Citroen Picasso. As a result of the collision a woman in her 80s has been airlifted to hospital.

UPDATE 4:20pm: The A55 has now reopened.

Original information below…

The A55 Westbound is currently closed following a serious accident between J38 A483 Wrexham Road (Posthouse roundabout) and J36A Chester Road (Broughton Shopping Park).

As a result of the accident traffic from Eccleston towards Broughton is being affected, however traffic is also also backing up towards the Post House Roundabout. Aled Edwards also told Wrexham.com that the ‘slip road closed off on roundabout, traffic starting to build and emergency services starting to arrive’.

Cheshire Police have since tweeted to say: “Serious RTC reported on A55 Southerly bypass Balderton, Police and ambulance at scene dealing. A55 is closed westbound from Post House Roundabout while we deal with the serious RTC. Avoid if possible.”

It has since been confirmed that a 46-year-old from Holywell has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Arriva Buses Wales have also tweeted to say that their Chester X4 service will not operate via the A55 until further notice.

Diversions are currently in place via the A483, Wrexham Road, and A5404, Saltney High Street, however delays are expected in the area and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

Highways England have since released a statement, saying: “Highways England traffic officers at the North West Regional Control Centre near Warrington have set electronic signs across the local and regional motorway and major A roads network to advise drivers of the closure.

“Drivers heading for North Wales are being urged to use the westbound M56 beyond junction 14 at Stoak interchange with the M53 and avoid using the southbound M53 and A55 route.

“Drivers with more local journeys are being allowed onto the westbound A55 but are being diverted off the road from Posthouse roundabout onto the southbound A483 for Wrexham or northbound A483 for Chester. Drivers using this route are advised there is significant congestion in the area with westbound A55 queues almost back to junction 39 of the A55 at Great Boughton.

“No damage to the carriageway or carriageway structures has been reported and it is possible the road will re-open before this evening’s peak travel period – but drivers are urged to check travel conditions before setting out on journeys.”

Anyone with any information in relation to the incident is urged to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 297 of 4/9/2015. Alternatively, information can be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
