Wrexham Libraries will be among the library services across the UK taking part in the Big Friendly Read – a series of events marking 100 years since the birth of world famous children’s storyteller Roald Dahl.

The Big Friendly read – the Summer Reading Challenge for 2016 – will encourage children aged from four to 11 to read six or more library books of their choice during the summer holidays.

Children will be encouraged to read books on the themes of invention, adventure, mischief, wordplay, child champions and friendships – all of which are explored in Dahl’s books.

Those who take part in the challenge will be rewarded with collectibles, plus a certificate and medal for every child who completes the challenge.

Children can sign up to take part in the challenge free of charge at their local library.

As well as the Big Friendly Read, a number of Roald Dahl-themed events and activities will take place across Wrexham.

The events taking place include creative writing sessions at Books Inside Out at Wrexham Library; the BFG at Ruabon Library; Willy Wonka at Llay Library; a showing of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Gwersyllt Community Resource Centre and crafting the beard of Mr Twit at Cefn Mawr Library.

Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities and Partnerships, said: “The centenary of Roald Dahl is a great opportunity to celebrate children’s books and to get children reading, and we hope as many children as possible take part in the Big Friendly Read.

“We also look to welcome families to crafting sessions, film showings, creative writing groups and other events at community centres and halls across the county borough.”
