Bomb squad called to Cefn Mawr after council workers uncover ‘explosive shell’

Update: A spokesperson for North Wales Police has confirmed that the area “has been declared safe and residents allowed have been allowed back to their homes.”

Original: Police have cordoned off an area of Cefn Mawr this afternoon, after council workers have uncovered a suspicious item.

The bomb disposal team have been called to an address in the Cefn Mawr area to deal with the item.

It was reported that the bomb disposal unit was called to the scene at around 2:30pm, with one person telling us that Heol Cefnydd had been closed off with police tape.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: “People working on behalf of Wrexham council digging up a back garden in Heol Cefnydd area of Cefn uncovered what looks like a 10inch explosive shell.”

We are told the bomb squad from Chester are attending the scene to assess and deal with the item.

A spokesperson for Wrexham Council confirmed that an item was found by workers and that the incident is being handled by police.
