Following on from last night’s ‘Storm Barney’, Wrexham Trading Standards have this morning issued a reminder to residents to remain vigilant against cold callers.

Wrexham Trading Standards are reminding residents that during periods of bad weather, traders may attempt to use this to their advantage for business. Due to the severe windy and blustery weather conditions, residents may notice an increase in trader’s cold calling and/or leafleting for work.

As a result Trading Standards are therefore reminding residents to be especially careful if they need remedial work doing on their homes. Gutters, drainpipes and roof tiles may have been damaged by the heavy winds and it is possible that rogue traders may be out and about cold calling and trying to take advantage of the situation.

Details released by Wrexham Trading Standards this morning state: “The important things to remember are; if in doubt keep them out, if you don’t want to do business with the trader don’t let them in.

“You can request a no cold calling sticker from Wrexham Trading Standards, by calling 01978 298997 and quoting OWL Eastern alert. The stickers can be displayed on your window or door, they act as a deterrent to cold callers, as they demonstrate that you do not welcome cold callers. They must be displayed in a prominent position.

“Please do not agree to work being done by traders who cold call. If you need work doing, contact established businesses for quotes before agreeing to work and use recommendations if you can. Look out too for your friends, family and neighbours, particularly those who live alone or who are more vulnerable.”

If you have any concerns about people cold calling in your area, or any other suspicious activity phone the Police on 101 or Citizens Advice Consumer Services on 03454 040506 (English)03454 040505 (Welsh).
