Renovation plans unveiled for Grade II listed terraced houses

A row of Grade II listed buildings in Ruabon are to undergo some much-needed renovation over the coming months.

Built over 300 years ago The Church Houses – also known as The Almshouses – are located on Church Street in the village.

Although they’ve been updated over the years, the properties have retained features such as Gothic cast-iron window casements, and sculpted lead flashing.

Wrexham Council’s in-house social lettings agency currently manages and let the properties on behalf of the Trustees of Ruabon Almshouse Charity.

The charity is keen to invest in the properties to preserve and protect their historic character, and to ensure they continue to serve as pleasant and comfortable homes.

The works will be managed by Wrexham Council’s Paul Martin as part of its Houseproud scheme.

The scheme helps property owners manage repairs and renovations, and provides safeguards so they know work will be carried out safely and to a high standard.

Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member for Housing, said: “The Almshouses are said to have been built by Vicar Richard Davis in 1711.

“They were originally used to house the poor or disadvantaged in the parish, but today they offer comfortable accommodation for housing beneficiaries of the charity.

“They really are charming examples of this type of property, and it’s wonderful that we’re able to look after them and undertake these important repairs, so they can continue to provide homes for people.”

The council will be using skilled tradesmen as part of the renovation, and repairs will include work on the windows, doors, lead-flashing and exterior paintwork.

The residents will be able to remain in their homes while the work is carried out.

Councillor Terry Evans, Lead Member for Planning, which includes buildings conservation, said: “With traditional buildings like these, it’s important to carry out work in a careful and sympathetic way.

“That’s why we’ll be using materials and styles that match the original features, and using tradespeople experienced in working on Grade II listed buildings.

“These lovely old properties are located within the Ruabon Conservation Area, and play an important role in the historic character of the village. I’m really pleased that we’re helping to look after them.”
