Remembrance service to commemorate 87th anniversary of Gresford Mining Disaster
A simple service to commemorate those who died in the Gresford Mining Disaster will take place in September.
Held at the Gresford Disaster Memorial, at Bluebell Lane in Pandy, the annual service will this year mark the 87th anniversary since the tragic explosion took the lives of 266 local men and boys on 22nd September 1934. 253 of the victims remain entombed.
To commemorate the event a simple memorial service will take place at 11am on Wednesday 22 September.
Many of those who died changed shifts to enable them to attend the third division derby match Wrexham versus Tranmere Rovers where both sides were unbeaten.
At the Racecourse a crowd of 10,100 people took off their hats and bare headed, stood to attention to observe a two minutes silence before the start of the match which ended in a draw with two goals each.
A blanket collection raised between £70 and £80 (equivalent to £5,000 to £ 6,000 today) in aid of the Gresford Disaster Relief Fund.
