Plans have been put forward to change the dual language medium at a village primary school to solely Welsh.

In a report due before Wrexham Council’s Executive Board next week it has been proposed that a public consultation proposing the change to the language medium at Ysgol Cynddelw, Glyn Ceiriog from dual English/Welsh medium to solely Welsh medium, is launched.

If approved, this consultation will take place between 9 January 2017 and 20 February 2017.

There are currently 98 pupils accessing education at Ysgol Cynddelw. There are currently a number of year groups that have no pupils accessing the English medium.

Within the Executive Board report it is noted that: “There are five mixed-age classes that include a part time nursery. In the Foundation Phase, there are two classes where pupils learn solely through the medium of Welsh and one class where pupils are taught mainly in English.

“In key stage 2, there are two mixed-age classes. In one class, teaching is in English and in the other, predominately in Welsh.”

As a result the proposals have been put forward due to falling numbers of pupils attending the English medium stream at the school.

The report will go before Wrexham Council’s Executive Board at 10am on Tuesday 13 December. For those who cannot attend the meeting it will be webcast live on the Wrexham Council website.
