Pro-independence march to take place in Wrexham in April
A pro-independence march will take place in Wrexham town centre next month.
Organisers YesCymru say they are planning a “carnival atmosphere” for the event on April 18th.
YesCymru chair Siôn Jobbins spoke at a public meeting in Wrexham recently, saying the choice for people in Wales ‘was becoming ever more stark’.
“We’re seeing that Scotland is moving towards independence, Ireland is moving toward re-unification and that leaves Wales with a very simple choice,” said Siôn.
“Either we move towards independence or we become part of England.
“The independence movement in Wales is moving forward very quickly and the march in Wrexham will be the first to take place in the wake of the Brexit deal and the new Boris Johnson government. We’re looking forward to another turnout in the thousands and will be organising further marches during the year.”
Organisers say previous pro-independence marches organised by the group last year in Caernarfon, Merthyr Tydfil and Cardiff had a total of 18,000 people attending, and local organisers are expecting ‘thousands’ to attend the Wrexham event.
A member of the local organising committee said: “We know many people from across Wales have already booked hotels and B&Bs to come for the weekend and we’ll be aiming to provide a real carnival atmosphere in the town for everyone who attends.
“A number of pubs and cafes are putting on live music on the Friday and Saturday and we’re encouraging shops and other venues in the town centre to put up bunting and flags. We want to showcase Wrexham and also show the people of Wrexham that independence is firmly on the political agenda.”
Previous marches have seen speakers such as Welsh international goalkeeper Neville Southall and rugby legend Eddie Butler speak out in favour of independence and speakers for this march will be announced in the coming weeks.
