Wrexham’s CCTV provision has been described as ‘invaluable’ after it played a key role in helping to convict three men involved in a vicious street robbery.

Three men have been jailed for a total of eight years after they were convicted of robbing a teenager as he walked alone through the streets of Wrexham during the early hours of New Year’s Day.

The complainant was set upon by three men and his rings were taken off his fingers. Defendants Jamie Ronald Griffiths, 25, of Heol yr Eglwys, Gwersyllt; Daniel James Griffiths, 22, of Bryn Glas, Gwersyllt, and Christopher Bambrough, 21, of Heol Hyfryd, Gwersyllt, all denied robbing Kyle Elson, 18, in Vernon Street, Wrexham, at about 1am on January 1st.

But following a six hour adjournment by the jury at Mold Crown Court in August they were all convicted – Jamie Griffiths and Christopher Bambrough by a majority of 11 to one and Daniel Griffiths by a majority of ten to two.

CCTV footage featuring the three defendants was shown at the trail and as the judge, Miss Recorder Elwen Evans QC, handed out custodial sentences.

Jamie Griffiths and Christopher Bambrough each received three years and Daniel Griffiths received two years.

Speaking after the trial, Cllr Hugh Jones, Lead Member for Communities, Collaboration and Partnerships said “This was a particularly brutal robbery and the work of the CCTV operators on the night was invaluable. This is another example of the sterling work that all the operators do, as well as highlighting the excellent collaboration between our CCTV operators and North Wales Police. Without their continued vigilance and dedication there may not have been a conviction in this case.”
