Members of the public are being urged not to break lockdown restrictions this weekend by turning up to watch the demolition of the town’s police station.

Work dismantling parts of the iconic tower has been ongoing for some weeks, with the surrounding buildings now gone and the windows from the main tower now removed.

Once complete a Lidl supermarket and drive-thru coffee shop will be built on the site.

The full demolition of the tower has been long-anticipated – marking a significant change to Wrexham’s sky line.

Last week Wrexham Council confirmed that the remainder of the tower will be taken down via a controlled explosion on Sunday.

However members of the public are being asked not to visit the area to watch the demolition, with an exclusion zone and road closures in place from 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM.

Road closures include:- The following road closures will also be in place:- Park Avenue and traffic going up Park Avenue towards the former station will be diverted along Penymaes Avenue. Powell Road from Tesco to Chester Road roundabout. Chester Road roundabout – Chester Street as far as the Fusiliers.

Wrexham Town Inspector Vic Powell, said: “Please do not come along and watch the demolition take place.

“Under normal conditions it would be different. However we are asking people to stay at home.”

Although people are unable to see the controlled explosion take place, it is being filmed for the Scrap Kings show on Quest (Discovery Channel) which will be shown next summer.

A spokesperson for Wrexham Council, said: “Residents in the area have been informed of what will be happening and of the necessary road closures that will be in place for the explosion.

“We know many of you would love to witness this historic event but due to the current fire break restrictions we’re asking you to stay away it will be recorded and shared on media so we’ll all be able to see how it went.”
