Plaid Cymru’s campaign for the council elections was launched this weekend with a visit from party leader Adam Price and the unveiling of electronic billboards carrying the party message promising to “shake up the council”.

The party is standing 24 candidates throughout the borough and is defending five seats and have published a national local government manifesto – PDF viewable here.

Party leader Adam Price said: “Plaid Cymru in Wrexham has set the bar high in terms of winning two by-elections in the past couple of years and the party’s vote here increased dramatically in the Senedd election last May. I’ve been very impressed by the quality and diversity of this very talented group of candidates and look forward to working with them after the election.

“Plaid Cymru has an ambitious range of policies for these council elections – including extending our free school meals pledge to secondary school pupils, building more affordable housing and ensuring councils buy more locally when it comes to contracts and tenders. Our councils in places like Gwynedd and Carmarthenshire are already leading the way and I look forward to Wrexham also implementing Plaid policies.”

Accompanying him was Plaid Cymru’s local chair Marc Jones, who said: “It was good to show Adam the work that’s been going on to promote the Plaid message in the borough. We visited a number of town-centre businesses on Friday and he had a very good response from customers and business owners alike – it was particularly good to show solidarity with the Ukraine fundraiser in Ty Pawb as well as seeing Dafydd Iwan singing ‘Yma o Hyd’ in Saith Seren.

“On Saturday we launched the campaign with a digivan tour of the borough and that had a great reaction outside the Racecourse as well as in wards where we’re standing. This is the largest group of Plaid candidates in Wrexham and we’re very hopeful of increasing our numbers of councillors compared to 2017.

“We know from our experience over the past five years that people want a council that listens, is more open and transparent and will look to fix problems in communities on an equitable basis. We want to see a council that includes all the talents on offer and has a clear manifesto of intent that looks to improve the town and the entire borough – that’s what you’ll get from Plaid Cymru. The pledges on free school meals, childcare and ensuring we spend more of the council’s money on local businesses and jobs are key ways to improve life for Wrexham’s citizens.”

He added: “As a group, we’ve always argued that councillors should better reflect the communities they serve and that’s why I’m so proud of our group of candidates – they are diverse, talented and will bring a real vibrancy and vision to the council if elected. Their experience will be critical in helping to shake up the council and improve life in Wrexham.”
