Staff at a Wrexham-based hospice have channelled their Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith as part of a ‘Bake Off’ for patients.

Members of Nightingale House Hospice Wellbeing Programme came together and created seven delicious cakes for patients to judge as part of their very own ‘Bake Off’.

Patients then had the tough job of taste-testing the homemade cakes.

Mary Tuckey, a patient at Nightingale House, explained, “The ‘Bake Off’ was great fun!

“It was clear to see lots of effort went into the cakes by the staff.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever been involved in a ‘Bake Off’, and I really enjoyed it.”

Another patient, Beatrice Williams, said: “I found it wonderful, and the whole thing was well thought out. We just got to have a lovely time testing the cakes.”

Wellbeing Centre Lead Carolyn James discussed the ‘Bake Off’: “We started doing this as one of the activities in the Wellbeing Programme when we discovered that we had an ex-baker as a patient in a previous cohort of patients.

“She inspired the Nightingale Team to start the ‘Bake Off’, and she was then inspired to make meringues again.

“The atmosphere the ‘Bake Off’ creates is so much fun. We have had really good feedback from the patients about how much they’ve enjoyed it.

“There was some competitiveness among the people involved, but it was all in good spirits.”

Patients who attend the Nightingale Wellbeing Programme get to take part in exercise classes such as armchair Tai Chi, music therapy, planning for the future, complementary therapy treatments and more.

Beatrice went on to talk about her experience of the Wellbeing Programme: “Coming to the Wellbeing Programme just makes a big difference to how I tackle things at home.

“It’s made me want to do more but in the right way that suits me.”

Mary added: “Everyone is so friendly whenever I come to the Wellbeing Programme. I’ve met some wonderful people here.

“I love the positivity that is here at Nightingale House.

“I try to take that away with me each time I come.”
