Wrexham skateboarders are celebrating following the opening of a new skate park.

The Alyn Waters Skate Park, located in Llay has been in the pipeline for a number of years – with several potential locations for the development having previously been put forward.

However after months of hard work, the skate park is now formally up and running.

To commemorate the opening of the skate park a special launch event took place, and was attended
by Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member Environment and Transport, Wrexham County Borough Council, members of Llay Community Council, Llay Youth Club, Ian Craven from the grant funders, Cory Environmental Trust in Britain CETB), Wrexham County Borough Council Officers and the close family of the late Cllr Malcolm Taylor for Llay, who had a huge involvement in securing the new facility.

The new Skate Park facility is suitable for all wheeled sports and was funded by a £47,000 grant from CETB and further contributions from Llay Youth Club who worked extremely hard to fund raise for the project.

Councillor David A Bithell, Lead Member Environment and Transport, Wrexham County Borough Council is delighted that the project is now officially in use. He said: “I am very pleased the new skate park is well used by the local community and we are all very grateful to Cory Environmental Trust in Britain for supporting the cost of the works. I would also like to pay tribute to the fundraising from the local community to help the grant bid.”

Angela Haymonds, Trust Secretary added: “Projects that provide facilities which focus on providing safe yet fun activities for young people are a priority for the Trust and we were delighted to receive an application for funding for this project.

“Having visited the site myself this summer it was wonderful to see how many children and young people are making use of this Skatepark already and what fantastic skills they are developing.”
