The next stage of improvement works for the town centre have been announced – including new storage for the eyesore congregation of bins on Yorke Street.

Although no date has been set for the next round of updates and improvements to the town, Wrexham Council say they will take place near St Giles Church and the neighbouring streets.

They will be the latest in a series of works to have taken place in the town in the past 12 months – with the “major phase one” repaving works taking place along Hope Street and Queens Street in 2018.

Elsewhere in town the bus station has seen the installation of new toilets, improved information screens; a planned disabled parking area and resurfacing of the highway immediately outside the station.

More recently several benches and bins were removed from Lord Street in a bid to tackle anti-social behaviour in the area.

As part of the new phase of works, Wrexham Council say there will be new litter bins throughout the town centre – hopefully meaning the end of the Armed Forces Day posters that have been on display on some of the bins since summer 2014.

The council’s street cleaning team will also get new, improved pushcarts.

New ‘heritage-style’ LED lighting will be installed on Queens Square, Lambpit Street and Queens Street, plus new LED lights for Temple Row.

The town will new flower beds being planed throughout the town centre and there will be tree pruning / clearing near St Giles Parish Church and to the trees overhanging on Temple Row and College Street.

As part of the plans it has also been proposed that there is a new storage area for bins used by residents and business on Yorke Street.

Earlier this year we highlighted the long-running issue of the bins congregation near St Giles’ Parish Church to the chief executive and council leader and asked if the local authority could do more to improve the ‘situation’ in the conservation area.

Other proposals for the Yorke Street area include creating a secure area for the collection of the bins and better management of the for the collection of bins on Temple Row.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “While we’ve already carried out a number of improvements to the streetscape this year, further planned updates are in hand for areas throughout the town centre.

“These works are already scheduled as part of planned improvements to the town centre. There are other works which are planned for, and which we would like to carry out, but those are dependent on funding.”

Cllr Terry Evans, Lead Member for Economic Performance and Regeneration, said: “While I’m very pleased with the extent of works which have already taken place in the town centre, I’m glad to see that further works are planned for the improvement of the area, and look forward to see them taking place.”
