A new ‘apart-hotel’ could soon be created in a move to help increase tourism accomodation in Wrexham city centre.

An application submitted to Wrexham Council – by Pegasus Group on behalf of Liverpool based Happy Days – has proposed that the Old Registry Office on Chester Street is converted into 13 separate rooms.

The Grade II listed building is thought to date back to 1727 and has been previously been as a District Register Office and office space.

In 2018 approval was granted to turn the building into apartments.

But with planning permission for the redevelopment now lapsed, fresh plans have been put forward to transform the building into accomodation.

It has been proposed that the building is converted into an apart-hotel – which would provide accomodation space that has the flexibility of a hotel.

If the plans are approved the ground floor would accomodate four-one bedroom apartments with five-one bed apartments and one-two bedroom apartment on the first floor.

Three-one bedroom apartments would be created on the second floor.

Each apartment would have a living space and bathroom.

As part of the plans there would also be a roof extension, which the applicants state “will not be visible from the front or the rear of the building.”

In a planning statement submitted to Wrexham Council, the applicants said: “The site is located outside of Wrexham City Centre, but within the City Centre Masterplan area, and therefore the granting of planning permission for the change of use of the property to a C1 Use Class Aparthotel would contribute to enhancing the vitality and viability of the area.

“It is considered that the change of use of the property represents a suitable form of development in accordance with the Wrexham County Borough Local Development Plan, and it is therefore kindly requested that planning permission is granted without delay.”

The application will be considered for approval by Wrexham Council at a later date.
