A team of hard-working Community Agents are on hand to help people aged 50 or older living in Wrexham.

Two new Community Agents are looking forward to providing free support and advice to residents of the Wrexham borough aged 50 or older.

New additions Justine Godfrey and Shelly Griffiths will act as Community Agents in the Glyn Traian and Gwersyllt areas, respectively.

Justine said: “I’m incredibly pleased to be part of the Community Agents team – it’s vital that residents in Wrexham do not miss out on those services that are available to them, and it’s very rewarding to be able to help them.”

Shelley said: “The work carried out by the team of Community Agents is becoming more and more important. With the increasing pressure placed on care services, it’s great that people like the Community Agents are there to help the older population reduce isolation and health concerns without having to resort to care services.”

Under the Community Agents scheme, representatives are assigned to seven different areas of the county borough – Ruabon, Penycae, Coedpoeth, Gwersyllt, Glyn Ceiriog, Caia Park, Glyn Traian and Rhosddu – and report directly to their local Community Council and help people over age of 50 to access services.

Feedback from service users has seen the scheme branded as “a bit of hope where there wasn’t any”, with others saying they have become “more involved” in their communities thanks to the help of agents.

As well as directing residents to services cover health and social care, Community Agents can also signpost those residents in need to other agencies that they would benefit from having support from.

Community Agents can provide information on social clubs, charities, community organisations, luncheon clubs and other support groups set up to help older people.

Cllr Joan Lowe, Lead Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said: “Many older people simply aren’t aware of the wide range of services out there which are specifically catered to help them – consequently, they could end up losing out needlessly.

“The Community Agents are there to help older people access the services and help they need.
“We know the majority of older people are keen to live independent lives and want to take care of themselves as long as possible; Community Agents can help point them in the right direction.

“The Community Agents offer a fantastic service – and even if you’re not an elderly person yourself, you may have a relative or neighbour who could benefit from their help.”
