M&S are moving out of the city centre, but will remain in Wrexham on Plas Coch the firm has announced.

David Hughes, Regional Manager for M&S told us, “Today we are announcing plans to open a brand-new M&S Foodhall in the Plas Coch Retail Park – offering our customers in Wrexham a brilliant food shopping experience with a fresh marketplace design, almost fifty per cent more space for food and a range of exciting new features including a cheese barge, digital wine-tasting and a bigger in-store bakery.”

“Shopping habits are changing, and we are reshaping our store estate across M&S to focus our investment on the right stores in the right places.”

“Our investment in this new store means we will be closing our existing store in Eagles Meadow Shopping Centre in the city centre when the lease expires later this year.”

“We have today informed our colleagues of our relocation plans and our priority is to support them through these changes. Many colleagues will transfer over to the new Foodhall and there will also be opportunities to work in other stores.”

“Our new M&S Wrexham Foodhall will open in Autumn 2023 and we will keep our current store open until this time.”

Although M&S have not stated where the new location will be – with ‘Unit D’ on Plas Coch former Sports Direct/JJB to let and vacant –  a planning application was recently granted by Wrexham Council for a redevelopment on Plas Coch with what appears to be a ‘foodhall’ style specification inside.

Unit H is more familiar as the former “DW”, more recently ‘Everlast’, gym building. Plans were lodged at the end of last year to install a new shopfront, to create two entrances – appearing to split the unit. There will be new trolley bays, and fenced off plant area.

One planning document details a prospective layout for the new retail unit inside the new version of ‘Unit H’:

Wrexham’s Chief Officer, Environment & Technical wrote in December, “I do not have any objections to the proposed development on highway grounds.”

Planning was granted on the 20th January allowing the applicant, property investor EPIC (NO. 1) LTD, to commence the work.

We have approached Everlast / SportsDirect for comment.
