Over sixty locations across the county borough are to undergo major street lighting improvements.

Work is underway installing 160 new columns and more than 2,000 new energy-efficient LED lanterns on routes and highways throughout Wrexham.

The installation project, backed by Invest to Save funding from the Welsh Government, will help Wrexham County Borough Council in its continued effort to reduce its carbon footprint, and ensure its infrastructure is environmentally sustainable.

In December 2015, the council submitted an application to the Welsh Government for funding of £900,000 to replace the units – with the council’s Environment Department contributing an additional £250,000.

The improvement program commenced on December 19 and will be ongoing until March 2017.

Cllr David A. Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “I’m very pleased to see the start of this project, which will see thousands of our lanterns replaced with more energy-efficient LED lighting.

“This funding will allow us to install more than 2,000 new LED lanterns on strategic corridors throughout the borough, and that will have a visible impact on our energy use.

“As a council, we’re always very conscious of our need to reduce our carbon footprint and reduce our overall energy use and costs”

“Our investment will allow us to replace lighting columns needing the end of their serviceable life, and in turn allow us to maintain roadside lighting for longer.”

Details of where the lighting upgrades can be found below.
