A local councillor has backed an appeal by Brymbo Sports and Social Complex for residents to get involved with the Royal British Legion’s Every Poppy Counts campaign.

The club, on College Hill in Brymbo, is encouraging residents to donate by text or online to the poppy appeal, make or print a poppy, laminate it or place it in a plastic wallet and attach it to the gates and railings of the complex.

It comes after the firebreak and coronavirus restrictions have meant that there have been changes to this year’s fundraising.

A spokesperson for the Brymbo Sport and Social Complex, said: “It’s really upset us that this year COVID is preventing a lot of veterans from doing their usual poppy collections.

“Our idea is that we invite you all to decorate our gates/railings with your drawings and interpretations of a poppy.

“Draw/make your poppy, pop it in a plastic wallet and seal with tape to save it from the weather and come down and tie it to the gates/railings.

“Then text your donation to the official Royal British Legion donation numbers.”

Dozens of residents have taken part in the appeal and left pictures and signs in commemoration of the poppy appeal on the venue’s gates.

County councillor Paul Rogers, who is also a director of the complex, has welcomed the initiative.

He said: “As councillor for the villages of Brymbo and Tanyfron I’m delighted to be supporting this initiative by the team at Brymbo Sports and Social Club in aid of the Every Poppy Counts appeal.

“This is a great idea to bring the community together in support of a worthy cause.

“I’d like to thank everyone who has got involved in this and look forward to seeing more poppies added to the display in the coming days.
