A local GP is helping to support Wrexham Hospice patients with life-limiting illnesses through Outpatient Clinics

Dr Jessica Roberts spilts her time between Llangollen Healthcare Practice and helping patients with life-limiting conditions at Nightingale House Hospice.

Originally from Wrexham, Dr Jessica first visited the hospice on Chester Road will her school choir several years ago.

Now her work at the Outpatient Clinics help to provide face-to-face support and assessments for patients with life-limiting illnesses.

Patients are referred to the clinic by a Health Care Professional or via a self-refer directly through the Nightingale House website.

“Outpatient clinics are a good way for patients to be fully assessed and initially meet the team, come to see the hospice environment, especially if they are expecting to need our support in the future,” explained Dr Jessica.

“It is good to come and visit as well as understand how the services here could benefit them. It’s probably one of the main advantages of having the Outpatient Clinics at the hospice.

“Our Patient Flow Team can assess their referral, and then the clinical admin team can organise an Outpatient appointment with a Doctor or a Nurse who will meet them, give them a tour of the hospice, and find out what services may benefit that patient.”

Dr Jessica continued: “On top of hosting outpatient appointments, my role at the hospice includes hosting patient talks for the Wellbeing Programme and discussing various topics surrounding life-limiting illnesses, including pain and medication.

“I love chatting with people, and to hear the patients share their experiences together it is lovely.

“I became a doctor because I like working with people, and at Nightingale House, the clinical team work together.

“We have discussions and make team decisions with experts from Supportive Care UK, who are Palliative Care Consultants.

“At the hospice, we help people and make a difference to their lives.”
