Lead Members of Wrexham Council Set For £9,000 Pay Increase

A number of Wrexham councillors are set for a pay increase for carrying out their civic duties.

Pay for some of those in some of the most senior positions could increase by as much as £9,000 under new proposals.

The basic allowance for all 52 elected councillors will go up from £12,681 to £13,175.

However, councillors on the executive board who currently earn £19,599 including their basic allowance are set to see their pay increase by over £9,000 to £28,780.

The increase applies to the eight lead members in areas such as housing, environment and transport and housing and planning.

Pay for the leader of the council will also go up slightly from £47,278 to £47,500.

And as of next year the mayor will receive £21,375 including their basic salary to carry out their civil role.

All of the salary changes have been made mandatory by the Independent Remuneration Panel for Wales and will be considered by the council’s executive board at their meeting on Tuesday.

According to the report which will go before them the number of councillors able to claim these additional amounts will be capped at 18 of the 52 elected to the council in May 2012.

The report also makes recommendations on care allowance, travel expenses, as well as claims for overnight stays and subsistence.

In his report to the Executive Board Trevor Coxon, Head of Corporate & Customer Services said:

“These changes are required as a result of the introduction of mandatory senior councillor salary levels from the Independent Remuneration Panel’s Report.

“There may be a slight increase in the cost, depending on which option is finally chosen, but the payments will be more consistent across Wales.”
