Shoppers and visitors of Wrexham Town Centre will be expected to pay 20 pence to use some town centre toilet facilities.

Councillors unanimously approved recommendations to introduce a few of 20 pence for use of the facilities on Henblas Street, in Wrexham Town Centre. As a result of the decision the public conveniences at will temporarily close to allow them to be upgraded to provide modern female, male and disabled facilities.

A cleaner/attendant will also be appointed to staff the facilities – it is hoped this will deter anti social behaviour at the toilets.

Speaking about the proposals earlier this week, Lead Member for Economic Development and Regeneration Councillor Neil Rogers said: “The current toilets in Wrexham are not fit for purpose. There are options for the future and we are looking at operating the costs against a backdrop of limited resources. We did do a consultation and 90 people responded, four also with letters.”

Cllr Rogers added: “I hope we can make them a attractive place and people use them for what they are meant for.”

The recommendations were supported by councillors and members of the Executive Board, with Councillor David A.Bithell adding: “The big thing is maintaining standards, cleanliness and welcoming people to Wrexham. It’s long overdue and I second the report.

Calls were also made for the opening hours at the toilet facilities at the Wrexham bus station to be extended, with Councillor Alun Jenkins saying: “All agree need to improve facilities we are providing. This is something that has been dealt with over a period of time.

“One of the things we spent time on was improving facilities at the bus station, not available on Sunday or at night, disabled facilities there are disappointing. What we have before us is a short term plan and what we are going to do.”

As a result of the recommendations the facilities at Bodhyfryd / Waterworld car park will also be closed and opening times of the Albion conveniences be varied as a result of the recommendations.
