An initiative to provide a highly visible presence of officers around retail areas around Wrexham town centre is now underway.

The annual ‘Op Santa’ aims to combat both shoplifting and antisocial behaviour in the run up to Christmas.

Throughout December there will an increased police presence in the town centre and around retail parks.

The operation has run in Wrexham for the past few Christmases and incorporates officers in both uniform and plain clothes.

Wrexham town inspector Vic Powell said: “We’ve got Op Santa running this month, which is an operation we run every December in the the town centre and also the retail parks.

“There will be a dedicated and targeted sort of presence to deliver engagement, prevention, intervention and enforcement when we need to. But it’s mainly about prevention.

“Op Santa is about actually being on hand. We’ve got to make sure that we’re visible and that we’re engaging.”
