Wrexham Council has started to publish regional vaccination data in its latest pandemic bulletin.

Public Health Wales reported +70 new cases for the Wrexham area in today’s update, with a positive proportion of 18.9% of tests. The latest update also has the seven day rolling benchmark figure up to the 20th which is now to 551.6 per 100k.

Today’s new update from Wrexham Council is the last of the Monday updates as the local authority moves to a once a week Friday update.

The full update for today is copied below, with all bolding and underlining of points is copied from Wrexham Council’s email, and we intend to do similar for future updates:

Dear Councillors, Community Councillors and the media,

This is a short update of the note that I circulated on Friday. Because the data seldom change much over the weekend and are changing more slowly generally, I will be issuing a single weekly update on Fridays in future. This will include a summary of the latest weekly vaccination data that are published by PHW on Thursdays (new Table 3).

COMMUNICATIONS

A link to the Council public briefing note on Friday, which you can also share on social media, is provided here: https://news.wrexham.gov.uk/covid-19-briefing-note-do-your-bit-stay-strong-and-stick-with-it/

DATA ON THE VIRUS

Please find attached:

Table 1 – the summary of the weekly data on the virus in Wrexham as a whole compared to other councils in North Wales

Table 2 – the summary of daily data for the 18 ‘MSOA’ statistical sub-areas of Wrexham used by Public Health Wales in their Tableau

Table 3 – a new summary of the vaccination programme. This table will be enhanced as PHW and BCUHB start to publish more data.

The County Borough as a Whole (Table 1) (the data for week ending 17th January are now largely finalised, though every day PHW update the data slightly for several previous weeks).

Wrexham remains worst in Wales for the rate per 100,000 population (551.6 today) and positivity (23.2% today) compared to 660.5 and 26.5 on Friday. The trend over the last few weeks confirms that the virus has peaked.

Hospital admissions and, sadly, deaths continue to rise.

The Sub-Areas (Table 2)

Most of the 18 ‘MSOA’ sub-areas of Wrexham used by PHW in their Tableau have improved since my last report to you on Monday, but some have not and the figures remain very high.

  • 0 have recorded its worst figures since 20th October (shown in bold on the table), compared to 1 on the 22nd
  • have greater than 550/100k, compared to 13 on the 22nd
  • have greater than 800/100k, compared to 5 on the 22nd
  • 16 are in the worst decile (10%) in Wales, compared to 16 on the 22nd, but this threshold is much lower (380.8/100k) than it was on Friday (460), reflecting the fact that cases have fallen much more quickly in South Wales.
  • The 5 with more than 700/100k (compared to 7 on Friday) are set out below:

o   Chrik and Ceirog Valley has 910                      – down from 972 on 22nd and 602 on the 18th

o   Gwersyllt West & Summerhill has 827             – down from 1198 on the 22nd

o   Hermitage & Whitegate has 765                        – down from 811 on the 22nd

o   Caia Park has 742                                               – down from 896 on the 22nd

o   Acton & Maes-y-dre has 712                             – down from 732 on the 22nd

  • 1 has less than 300/100k, compared to 1 on 22nd. The lowest is 120/100k, compared to 271 on the 22nd

Settings

The principal settings for the virus remaining households followed, some way below, by outbreaks at the Maelor Hospital, in care/nursing homes (including, sadly, a number of hospitalisations and deaths) and the prison. There are also several work-place clusters.

MANAGING THE VIRUS

General

The Level 4 Alert lockdown has begun to have an effect on the rate of infection. Welsh Government will review the lockdown this week, but is unlikely to relax it.

The Vaccination Programme (Table 3)

The data in Table 3 show the degree to which PHW and BCUHB are achieving the targets set out in the National Vaccination Plan
