New stickers asking people to use the appropriate recycling containers for recycling and food waste have been appearing on people’s black bins.

It comes as part of a drive to encourage people to recycle more wherever possible.

Locally the black / blue bins are used for household waste, with separate recycling boxes / bins for glass, paper, plastic, food and garden waste.

Over the past few years there has been a push locally in encouraging residents to recycle more – with Wrexham Council aiming to hit the Welsh Government’s 70 per cent recycling rate.

However the new stickers have resulted in several residents getting in touch to say they have never been provided with a container for their food waste and weren’t aware it had to be disposed of separately.

Wrexham.com asked Wrexham Council if the stickers are part of a new recycling campaign and who residents can contact if they need containers for their food waste.

Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “These stickers are there as reminders for those who have the appropriate containers to please make use of them.

“We will still be emptying black bins where we find they contain recyclable items, but we want to do everything we can to encourage people to recycle wherever possible, and these stickers are part of that drive.”

Residents who do not have a particular recycling container are also being invited to order one from the council website. There is a charge for green bins, however all other recycling containers are free.
