A local cricket club manager has been celebrated for her work in the local community with a nomination for ‘Local Sports Champion’.

Amy Griffiths, general manager of Gwersyllt Park Cricket Club, received the special recognition from Wrexham MP Sarah Atherton.

Gwersyllt Park Cricket Club has over 700 members who attend the club to socialise throughout the year.

In addition to the club’s main adult Saturday Teams, the club now has a disabled cricket squad, a female cricket team and youth cricket teams across four age ranges (under 9s, 11s, 13s and 15s).

Gwersyllt Park Cricket Club was one of several organisations across Wrexham to receive a share of UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF)

It will invest £500,000 into facility improvements and supporting local residents and members of the community.

On Tuesday 30 January Amy attended a Local Sport Community Champion Reception at Number 10 Downing Street where she updated the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lucy Frazer MP and Ms Atherton’s office on how the works were progressing.

Ms Atherton was unable to attend the reception with Ms Griffiths due to a family bereavement.

During the reception, she shared that building works for the cricket pavilion are underway and are set to be completed in September 2024.

This new facility will provide local residents with digital and numeracy courses as well as physical activity classes.

In addition, the club is expanding the cricket provision with more availability for girls and ladies’ teams, as well as increasing opportunities for younger players.

Amy confirmed that the club is also resolving the longstanding drainage issues at the car park, which was causing residents issues with parking.

Amy Griffiths, Gwersyllt Park Cricket Club manager said: “I am very honoured to have been chosen as a community sport champion by Sarah Atherton. The visit to Number 10 was a great experience.

“What we have achieved as a club in the last few years has been a great team effort, the hard work and determination is paying off and the start of the new community hub is just the beginning.

“This club has a great future and I’m so lucky to be a part of it, with such a great team.”

Sarah Atherton MP added: “Having nominated Amy Griffiths, general manager of Gwersyllt Cricket Club, as Wrexham’s ‘Local Sport Community Champion’, a reception at Number 10 Downing Street was the perfect opportunity to highlight how UK Government funding is enabling the club to lead the path to sporting success.

“Gwersyllt Cricket Club was amongst many recipients in Wrexham who received a portion of £22.7 million from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.

“Amy shared some exciting updates with us, outlining that building and drainage works for the new cricket pavilion have begun.

“On top of this, they are expanding their girls and ladies’ teams, as well as increasing opportunities for young, budding cricketers.

“We are so lucky to have these sporting opportunities right on our doorstep – the club is a true credit to the community.

“This is an exciting new chapter in the history of the club and well done to those involved. I will be closely following their progress.”
