Hundreds visited a rural university campus for an annual industry roadshow to showcase innovations designed to improve road safety for motorists, residents and the highways workforce.

Glyndwr University’s Northop campus hosted the North Wales Highway Authorities and Utilities Committee roadshow for the second consecutive year.

The committee coordinates road maintenance and improvement works between utility companies and contractors, ensuring that works on the region’s roads are carried out with as little disruption to road users and members of the public as possible.

More than 250 representatives from local authorities, utility companies, construction and engineering firms attended the event on Tuesday 16 July.

Attendees included seven Welsh local authorities, including Wrexham, Denbighshire and Flintshire County Councils, Cheshire West and Chester Council, Dwr Cymru, Dee Valley Water, Scottish Power and Wales and West Utilities.

Public services provider Amey, Capita Symonds, Amberon Limited and the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agency also visited the roadshow.

Alistair Haydock, managing director of AlderCross Limited, which organised the event, said: “People get upset when you dig a hole in the road and it causes disruption to their journey and one of the roles of HAUC is to work with the industry’s contractors to help ensure, for example, that any major gas or electric works take place at the same time.

“As well as providing networking opportunities, the roadshow gives a platform for exhibitors to show their latest products and services which are designed for people to do their jobs on the road.

“All of the products have safety at the top of the agenda – whether that be for construction workers, motorists, local residents or all members of the public – and improving safety on the region’s roads is very much one of the strongest themes around the roadshow.”
