“Fly tipping is lazy, unacceptable and puts council staff at risk picking it up”
Incidences of fly-tipping have increased in Wrexham since new coronavirus restrictions were introduced – despite the county’s three household recycling centres remaining open.
The above images show waste dumped in Corkscrew Lane, along the back lanes leading to Hafod. It was removed by council staff this morning.
Cllr David A Bithell, lead member for environment and transport said: “Yet again people choose to drive down unlit country lanes and dump waste out of cars or vans.
“Our Recycling Centres have been kept open at Bryn Lane, Plas Madoc and Brymbo, (booking only), these sites have remained open through this latest tier 4 restrictions.
“A lot of time and effort has gone into making these sites safe for residents to use.
“Fly tipping is lazy, unacceptable and puts council staff at risk picking it up. Our staff collected this earlier today.”
Last week Wrexham Council released a statement about the increase in fly-tipping in the area, saying that the actions of a “selfish few” mean that its resources are being used to clean-up the environment, rather than concentrating on improving the environment “in a way that will benefit us all.”
The following advice was issued by the local on what to do if you discover fly-tipping:
- Do not touch the waste, it may contain hazardous substances.
- Do not disturb the site, as it may contain evidence that could help identify the offender and lead to a prosecution.
- If you see someone fly tipping note the date, time and place of the occurrence.
- Note what the waste looks like and how much of it there is.
- Note a description of any vehicles involved, along with registration numbers.
- Do not approach any fly tippers. They are doing something which is illegal, they do not want to be caught and may become violent.
