A55 roadworks lasting until March set to begin at end month
Motorists travelling on the A55 in Flintshire are set for major roadworks, starting at the end of January and lasting until the end of March.
The extensive project will cover the area from junction 36 at the Warren Interchange to the Wales-England border, with significant lane closures expected.
The works, primarily focusing on repairing underlying concrete bays and resurfacing, will commence on the eastbound side, followed by the westbound carriageway.
The project will kick off with preparatory works at Junction 36A Broughton Retail Park.
These initial works, scheduled from 26 January to 29 January and 2 February to 7 February, will involve overnight slip road and lane closures.
The main resurfacing works will take place from 11th February to 3rd March 2024.
During the roadworks period, drivers are encouraged to plan their routes in advance to minimise disruptions.

- Junction 36A Broughton retail park eastbound on-slip and lane closed overnight.
2 February – 7 February:
2 February, 5 February and 6 February
- J36A Broughton retail park westbound off-slip and lane closed overnight from 20:00 – 06:00.
3 February 06:00 – 06:00 5 February
- J36A Broughton retail park westbound off-slip and lane closed for 24 hours.
Main resurfacing works eastbound
11 February 2024 – 3 March 2024:
Overnight weekday closures, weekend closures and daytime lane closures 11 February – 23 February
- A55 closed overnight eastbound from junction 36 Warren Interchange to junction 36A Broughton retail park from 20:00 – 06:00 every weekday night.
16 February 20:00 – 19 February 06:00.
- A55 weekend closure eastbound from junction 36 Warren Interchange and junction 36a Broughton retail park.
23 February 20:00 – 25 February 20:00.
- A55 weekend closure eastbound from junction 36 Warren Interchange and junction 36a Broughton retail park.
25 February 20:00 – 3 March 06:00
- A55 closed overnight eastbound from junction 35 Dobshill to junction 38 Posthouse.
12 February 06:00 to 2 March 20:00
- Daytime lane closures.
This project is aimed at removing worn-out surfacing and resurfacing with an improved product.
Additionally, the works will involve replacing gulleys, manholes, and sections of the vehicle restraint system.
These improvements are expected to result in a quieter road surface, increased safety, and fewer unplanned closures for emergency repairs.
Traffic Wales said: “Since January 2020, we have done about 98 temporary road repairs on this section.”
“More than half of these repairs were done during the day with rolling roadblocks and overnight. Doing this work now will reduce daytime disruption from roadblocks and from overnight closure.”
The works will be carried out in phases, with the eastbound carriageway being the first focus, followed by the westbound. The contractor will work in shifts to ensure a continuous working schedule.
A spokesperson for Traffic Wales said: “We will close one side of the road at a time (eastbound first, then westbound).
“This is to repair or replace the concrete slabs and put down 2 layers of new surfacing
“We will close lanes from Monday to Friday between 06:00 and 20:00.
“We will close the road overnight from 20:00 to 06:00 on weekdays and close it from Friday 20:00 to Monday 06:00 on weekends.”
