Following on from the great success of an art sale which took place on April, where each piece of art was wonderfully created by a very talented lady living with dementia, Mrs Pat Rayfield, Dementia Friendly Wrexham are running an Inclusive Arts programme for those living with dementia and their carers.

The Rayfield family, (pictured Ann Edwards-Smith (Daughter) and Jo Edwards (Grand-Daughter)) kindly donated the final amount raised, a staggering £1,300.00 to the Dementia Friendly Wrexham (pictured Dave Mainwaring, Norah Lucas (chair) and Clare Roberts (secretary)) steering group this week.

“As a group we wanted to ensure that the funds would be put to great use, and what better way to honour the positive attitude and great talent of Pat Rayfield and her family to ensure that the money went into providing art opportunities for those living with dementia.”

Clare Roberts said: “Pat is a great example that people can live well with dementia, with the right support. Pat’s family’s generosity towards the Dementia Friendly Wrexham group can ensure that this message continues to be proven in the future. This is the message that we, as a group, want to reinforce to the community of Wrexham that with awareness and understanding, people can continue to live enjoyable lives in their own communities”.

“There is masses of research into the importance of arts for those living with dementia, and the positive effect it can have. Art doesn’t demand anything more than living in that moment, and any level of talent is able to partake and enjoy. Pat’s husband, John, was a great advocate of keeping busy, helping with research projects and always seeking ways for her to continue to enjoy life was key to Pat discovering a new talent after her diagnosis of dementia.”

Local artist, Margaret Roberts, who facilitated the art Pat Rayfield so lovingly enjoyed, has offered to be part of the project which starts this September.

The sessions will take place in St Margaret’s Church Hall, Chester Road, Wrexham. LL11 2SH, starting on the 19th September 2018 from 1pm – 3pm.

The pilot scheme will start as a 4-week programme taking place each Wednesday until 10th October. The sessions will be free, with all materials and refreshments included.

Places can be booked via the Dementia Friendly Steering Group using their e-mail address [email protected]. Places are limited, so people are encourage to book early. The deadline for booking is Monday 10th September 2018. Transport grants are available if required.
