Councillors to debate nominations for Wrexham’s new mayor and deputy

Councillors will this week vote to appoint the new mayor and deputy mayor of Wrexham.

Two nominations have been put forward for the positions, which Wrexham Council describes as being a “political gift”.

However last year a petty and at times personal row broke out in the council chamber over the selection process for the mayoral role.

It led to Garden Village councillor Andy Williams, being appointed to the role for a second time after being put forward as a neutral nomination.

On Wednesday (20 March) councillors will vote on whether to appoint current deputy mayor, Cllr Beryl Blackmore – who represents Marford and Hosely – to the position of mayor.

A nomination for Cllr Tina Mannering – who represents Gwersyllt East – to take over as deputy mayor has also been put forward.

The mayor and deputy mayor will be respectively formally elected and appointed at the Annual Meeting of the Council, which will be held on Tuesday 21 May.

If the nominations are accepted both Cllr Blackmore and Cllr Mannering will serve in the roles for the next 12 months,.

The meeting of the full council will take place at 4pm on Wednesday 20 March. The meeting will also be webcast live on the Wrexham Council website.
