A new report to all councillors gives details of the council’s planned programme of highway related works to be delivered in 2019/20.

With lots of talk on the state of Wrexham’s roads there is good news for some residents and those who use the roads, with some resurfacing of key routes due to take place.

As we reported when the news broke that the Tesco roundabout in town was to get resurfaced, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, Cllr David A Bithell said: “The Welsh Government has given us £1.4 million over the next two years for potholes so we have been in dialogue. Think it is £750,000 this year and £750,000 the year after.

“There will be approximately £2.4 million of work, some of which is Welsh Government money and some our own capital money which we have identified over the last couple of years.”

Previously we have reported that an estimated £28 million is needed to bring Wrexham’s highways up to scratch. Overall £2.3 million is needed each year just to keep the status quo and maintain a steady state in the condition of the existing network.

The new report is not public that we can spot as of yet, however has been produced to keep councillors, ‘the public and interested stakeholders’ informed as to the works taking place during the current financial year. If you want more detail on the work near to you, ask your councillor for information.

Parts of the below roads/areas are set for resurfacing, with a note that reads: “The £1.2m funding made available by the Welsh Government has been directed towards those parts of the strategic A & B classified road network which pose the greatest risk to the travelling public and to the local authority if not well-maintained. Positive reconstruction and the resurfacing of these routes will help improve resilience and reduce the whole life cost of maintaining the functional importance of these routes which link communities and Wrexham to the wider strategic road network.”

Intriguingly the “Guildhall Car Park” is also listed under ‘resurfacing’ – however we have double checked and there is no u-turn there, and it refers to works previously explained to us when we queried about a man-with-clipboard on the carpark.

The following roads are listed for surface dressing. No technical detail is given, but usually this means some form of bitumen binder with rolled stone chippings on top, and then loads more chippings added on top of that. This often comes with reduced speed limits while the work takes place and shortly after due to the loose stone.

The report gives a quick disclaimer that “…whilst every effort will be made to deliver this programme to the timescales stipulated, the programme will inevitably be subject to change as a result of unplanned or unforeseen circumstances.”

It adds that a copy of the programme ‘will be’ made available on the Council’s website and will be updated periodically to reflect any changes that may occur. We hope to link up and circulate that in the usual manner once it becomes public.
