A public consultation over plans to build council-owned social housing on the site of a former Wrexham care home, is now underway.

The pre-planning application consultation for the Nant Silyn site in Pont Wen, was launched by Wrexham Council in June.

Earlier this year the local authority announced plans to kick start a programme of building their own social housing on their own land – starting on the site of the former care home.

The former Nant Silyn site has sat disused since Wrexham Council voted in favour of ‘decommissioning’ the care home in October 2015. The 29 bedroom facility had been the only council-owned care home in the county borough, however it was closed after being seen as “no longer financially viable or required”.

Pre-application plans published for the site on June 15th show that the following accommodation could be built: 8×1 bed flats (two ground floor adapted), 6×2 bed semi-detached houses and 1x bed fully adapted bungalow.

Both the semi detached and apartments would be two storeys high; with bungalow described as being a ‘fully adapted detached bungalow’ with three bedrooms.

There would also be a “spacious back garden” for each individual property.

One parking space would also be provided per dwelling; along with one parking space per apartment with five additional visitor spaces.

In terms of the characteristics of the buildings, the design and access statement explains: “The proposed development shall compliment the character of the surroundings and thus shall be in-keeping with the existing features of the residential area.

“The proposed materials and design are to reflect existing style. Proposed boundary treatments are to be timber fencing / gates similar to the surrounding houses.

“Each individual home will have spacious back garden and front onto a small landscape strip of green space with one designated car parking spaces all defined and suitable for wheelchair users.

“Both hard and soft landscaping proposals are designed to be easily maintained and sympathetic to the development and planting where possible chosen to provide year round interest and colour and to include evergreen ornamental species where possible.”
