The Member of Parliament for Clwyd South has praised Bangor-on-Dee volunteers for bringing festive spirit to the village, following the village’s Christmas light switch-on.

A group of volunteers in Bangor-on-Dee work together to organise Christmas activities for the village each year.

his year, in line with the current guidance, these activities have included putting up and decorating the Christmas tree with lights and decorations outside St Dunawd’s Church, organising a village treasure hunt, arranging a best dressed house competition and sending a Christmas card to every household.

Simon Baynes MP, who was joined by councillor Rodney Skelland, praised the volunteers known as Bangor-on-Dee’s Christmas Committee, which includes three members of the Community Council, for all their hard work and community spirit in organising the Christmas programme for the village – including a treasure hunt.

Schoolchildren from Bangor-on-Dee’s after school club also played a part by creating and placing decorations on the tree.

The treasure hunt is open now and closes on 23rd December. Residents from the local or surrounding area who are looking to join in can pick up a map from the box at 7 Ludlow Road for £1.

Proceeds go towards next year’s Bangor-on-Dee Christmas activities and the winner will be announced on the village Facebook page on 24th December.

Local volunteer, Becky Johnston, said: “It’s been a privilege to coordinate this year’s activities in the village and to see so many people and businesses come together at a difficult time.

“We are completely self-funded by the community so it’s amazing what people can do when they put their heads together.

“We knew we had to do something different due to the restrictions but for all age ranges. All our activities are for the whole family but the cards in particular were aimed at those isolated from family this year or living alone.

“By sending a card to every household, we wanted to remind villagers that there is someone to talk to this Christmas.”

Speaking after the Christmas lights switch-on, Mr Baynes said: “I was so pleased to attend the Bangor-on-Dee Christmas lights switch-on.

“It’s wonderful to see the community spirit after such a difficult period and I would like to thank the Bangor-on-Dee Christmas Committee for all their hard work and innovative ideas to celebrate Christmas safely this year.

“I was really impressed to hear that the Christmas treasure hunt boards have all been hand-made and each sponsored by a local business.

“I would encourage everyone in the area to take part and of course, follow Government guidance when participating.”
