An event supporting local and independent businesses in Wrexham Town Centre is set to take place next month, with a host of activities taking place to show off what the town has to offer.

On December 6th Small Business Saturday is coming to Wrexham; an event that aims to support and promote local and independent businesses in the area.

Small Business Saturday has been a popular event in the USA for several years and encourages people to ‘shop local’ and support the small businesses in your local community. Small Business Saturday has managed to draw a large amount of money back into the local economy.

Across Wrexham Town Centre there are a number of events taking place to celebrate the event day, each highlighting and promoting the variety of local businesses that Wrexham has to offer.

This year’s event features a wealth of small business in Wrexham including, La Baguette, Martin Rees Jewellers, Pickles and Spice, Emz Cakes Creative Cafe, Ark Pet Supplies, Piccolo’s and Wrexham’s Indoor Markets (to name just a few!) Small Business Saturday also coincides with the Father Christmas Parade / opening of Father Christmas’ Grotto in the Peoples Market.

One of the organisers behind the event is Emma Wilson, the owner of Emz Cakes Creative Cafe on Chester Street. Emma told Wrexham.com: “The reaction we have had to the event has been amazing. It has taken a lot of planning, but from the beginning it shows what we can do.

“People have changed the way they shop now. There are lots of independent shops in Wrexham that aren’t in the likes of Broughton or Cheshire Oaks. What people want from a town centre has changed. We need to offer different things now that the bigger shops don’t have.”

Last year Wrexham took part in Small Business Saturday for the first time, with an event held on Queens Square. However this year’s event will take place across all of the town centre – with a Wrexham Business Jigsaw Trail and a Cupcake trail planned.

As well as the arrival of Father Christmas, a number of local businesses will also take over the Peoples Market for the day, including: face painting, handmade Christmas gifts, beauticians, handmade duvets, painted wine glasses and jewellery stalls. Wingetts have also offered several empty shops across the town centre which will also be filled with pop up shops for the day.

While many of the events will take place indoors, outside a road closure on Chester Street has been confirmed, with children’s fairground rides and activities taking place throughout the day. There will also be free car parking in all Council owned car parks in Wrexham Town Centre will also be available on December 6th – as well as no town centre roadworks.

It is hoped that Small Business Saturday will have a positive impact on Wrexham Town Centre and that people will get involved and embrace the positive message of the day.

Emma said: “Wrexham Town Centre isn’t rubbish, there are lots of shops on offer. Town is more spaced out now, but we can all try to link it back together. We are hoping that when people follow the Wrexham Business Jigsaw Trail that they will find some new things.

“There is stuff to do for everyone, I remember being little and spending all day in the town. I hope the event will change people’s perceptions of the town and I hope it will help when they come into Wrexham and see it busy.

“If you don’t come into the town centre then you don’t see the independent shops that we have to offer. When you use an independent shop, you’re helping a person who lives in Wrexham – the person who owns the shop probably even serves you.”

Wrexham’s Small Business Saturday will take place on December 6th from 10am – late. Further information on all the businesses / activities taking place in Wrexham on Small Business Saturday can be found here.
