Aspiring Yale Sports Journalist Receives Diana Award

An aspiring sports journalist at Yale College has received a Diana Award for Courage for enthusing youngsters about sport.

A level learner Terri Ritchie from Gwersyllt was nominated by Rotary International who were impressed by her work on the World Olympic Dreams project and dedication to her school PE department as pupil member of their Olympic committee.

In addition the 17 year old was given a high commendation for her remarkable role with Wrexham Sports Development as a Gold Ambassador for Wrexham.

“I am privileged and overwhelmed to be recognised,” said Terri “my dad is really proud of me.”

Over the summer she will receive a certificate and an invitation to visit the Althorp Estate as part of her high profile award celebrations.

“Terri’s impressive accolade of awards demonstrates her commendable efforts to advocate the benefits of sport and we are delighted to endorse her message,” said Jasbir Dhesi, Principal at Yale College.

The former Ysgol Bryn Alyn pupil returned from a trip to Iowa in October 2011. The trip was generously part sponsored by Wrexham Yale Rotary Club and gave Terri the opportunity to experience USA culture and reciprocate with presentations of Wales whilst advocating the benefit of sport to youngsters.

“Terri is an exceptional role model and gives so much of her time freely to support sport development in Wrexham,” said Johanna Ebrey from Ysgol Bryn Alyn.

Terri brought home valuable links to the region and continued to present to primary schools in the region to recommend sports.

She was awarded the Wrexham Sports Development Junior Volunteer Award alongside student peer Daniel Darlington in February. Terri was then nominated by Wrexham Yale Rotary Club for a Rotary Young Citizen Award.

Although she didn’t win Terri received a commendation certificate which was presented to her at a Yale Rotary club meeting. Rotary International learned of her fantastic commitment to advocating sport and presented her testimonials for consideration for a Diana Award which she won.
