Aspiring entrepreneur collects prestigious award

A Coleg Cambria student has been announced as runner up in a prestigious and highly competitive business challenge.

George Wilbraham, a Yale Sixth student, competed in ‘Making Business Happen Awards’ – an event which highlights and celebrates entrepreneurial talent.

This year Coleg Cambria had two of its submissions make it through the to final; one team and one individual submission from George.

Hosted by the University of South Wales, the event saw George crowned runner up – bagging a prize of £1000 while the college was awarded a further £500.

George returned with prize of £1,000 and the college was awarded a further £500.

After a trip to Milan, George plans on using the rest of his winnings to support his studies of Business Management at Bath University and his entrepreneurial talents alongside.

George was recently named Coleg Cambria’s Enterprise Student of the year 2018. As well as leading the college’s Enterprise Committee and developing various enrichment activities for fellow students, he has brought home several awards over the past 16 months, both solo and as part of a team, including winning Best Business Skills Award 2018; Gold in the Welsh Skills Finals 2017 and runner up in Wrexham’s Social Enterprise Awards 2017 (to name but a few!)

Coleg Cambria Deputy Director Learner Experience & Enterprise, Rona Griffiths, described George as being a “force of nature.”

“He possesses a truly enviable rate of energy, intelligence and intuition, coupled with great focus, persistence and good humour,” continued Rona.

“He has used his entrepreneurial drive to develop student-led enrichment activities through the Enterprise Committee. Students, staff and our chosen charity have all benefited from his hard work.

“He loves a challenge and I would like to wish him all the best, he has a bright future ahead. It’s been a pleasure to support him and other talented students during their time at the college.”

Yale Sixth Lecturer in A Level Business, Mel Henry added: “It has been a pleasure to welcome George at Yale 6th over the last two years.

“He has been an ambitious and self-driven student who chose to make the most of his two years at our College. Not only has he excelled in his A levels he has also grabbed every opportunity presented to him.

“For example, entering and succeeding in Business competitions, founding our college enterprise committee and supporting our Principal Sue Price in giving a talk to parents during our advice nights. He has been a real inspiration to current and future students.

“George’s journey to success has only just begun, and it will be a pleasure to see what the next chapter after leaving college will bring. I will certainly miss him in class.”
