Apartment Plans For Town Centre Pub – With Business no Longer Seen as ‘Viable’
The remainder of a town centre pub could be converted into apartments due to the business no longer seen as viable.
In an application submitted to Wrexham Council it has been proposed that the ground floor of The Commercial on College Street, is converted into two residential apartments.
The site already has planning permission to convert the first and second floor of the building into self-contained apartments, with an initial application submitted back in 2014.
Permission to press ahead with the conversion was granted by councillors in February 2015.
Initially it was proposed that the ground floor of the building was retained for use as a public house, however the new application states: “After several attempts to run the business as a public house, it has been deemed the public house is not viable to continue trading as a business.”
Under the new proposals the ground floor of the building would be converted into two self-contained apartments, each comprising of two bedrooms.
Externally there will be no major changes to the appearance of the building, with only minor alterations proposed to the side and rear of the building.
The Design and Access Statement concludes: “We feel this planning application should be looked favourably upon as the intention is to provide additional accomodation within the town centre.
“The proposed self-contained apartments would be ideally suited to young professionals seeking accommodation within the town centre.
“We are utilising an existing resource and creating new accommodation within an existing structure.
“By allowing this proposal to take place, a failing business can take a new lease of life and support the local community by providing new residential apartments suitable for young couples.”
The application will go before Wrexham Council’s Planning Committee at a later date.
