A Wrexham scout has been selected to attend the 24th World Scout Jamboree in 2019 as part of the Welsh contingency.

16-year-old Kian Paddock, a pupil at Ysgol Clywedog has been scouting since joining Beavers at a young age and is now a young leader at 6th Wrexham.

The 24th World Scout Jamboree will be held in West Virginia, USA, and will take place on 22nd July – 2nd August 2019 at The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. It’s to be hosted jointly between Boy Scouts of America, Scouts Canada and the Scout Association of Mexico.

Each scout had to submit a written application, from there some were chosen to take part in a selection camp where they had to demonstrate many skills and also had to be interviewed.

It will feature the hallmarks of past world jamborees, such as the Global Development Village, the World Scout Centre, a special sustainability initiative, and the socialisation elements that allow everyone to make life-long friends from around the world.

Kian said: “When I got the news I had been selected it all seemed so far away and I can’t believe how quick it has come around as it has been months in the planning.

“We have all been meeting up on camps on a regular basis which has helped us all get to know each other ready for the trip away and we are now really looking forward to the experience.

In addition the host site, The Summit Bechtel Reserve offers the most advanced adventure camping base for youth in the world.

Participants might experience “wild and wonderful” adventures such as The Rocks, one of the largest man-made climbing facilities in the world, to zip lines that cover 5.45 miles/8.77 km, to The Park, one of the largest outdoor skateboard facilities in the world, or The Trax, one of the largest BMX bike facilities, and three man-made lakes and pools that offer a variety aquatics activities

During this experience they will be having an educational visit to both New York and Washington DC. They will also be having Hosted Hospitality in Canada and will be staying with a scout group teaching them about local traditions and show off local sights.

As part of their diverse fundraising initiatives a curry night will be held at the Anise Indian restaurant on Monday 28th January which will see money from food sales generously donated to assist.

Restaurant manager Robb Golam said: “This is such a great opportunity for Kian and we are really keen to help make this dream come true for him, it’ll be a great night for a good cause so do come and get your tickets fast.”

Kian added: “I am really grateful to Robb and his team at Anise for helping support me with my fundraising.”
