People across Wrexham are being encouraged to register to vote as part of a weeklong national campaign.

Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths, is backing the National Voter Registration Drive, which is running between 1st and 7th February.

The drive, organised by ‘Bite the Ballot’ as well as a host of collaborators, will coordinate a week of social action, calling on people to register to vote in time for the National Assembly Election in May.

Last year’s drive was hugely successful with over 441,000 people registering to vote, 90% of which were online registrations.

Now entering its third year, although the campaign has been a major success, a staggering 10 million people remain missing from the electoral roll.

Lesley Griffiths AM said: “Voting is your basic democratic right. It empowers individuals, helps shape future policies and ensures the public’s voices are heard. Being on the voter register also helps people boost their credit rating and can, therefore, help with loan, credit card or mortgage applications.

“Bite the Ballot’s National Registration Drive is an excellent initiative which has already achieved tremendous success but with millions of people still absent from the electoral roll, I would encourage young people in Wrexham to register to vote to make sure they have their say on the major issues in our society.”
