£38m To Be Spent On Affordable Housing & Improving Housing Stock
Over £30m is to be spent on the creation of more affordable housing in the Wrexham area and the renovation / improvements of thousands of Council housing stock.
As part of the Council Plan it has been announced that 80 new affordable homes will be built in Wrexham in the next twelve months. This is an increase on the 57 which were built the previous year, which saw Wrexham Council fail to hit their affordable housing target.
Overall a £38m spending programme for 2015/16 has been approved by the Executive Board and over the next 12 months it is anticipated that more than 2,500 homes will receive brand new kitchens and bathrooms. 700 properties will also receive new heating systems and 700 properties will be reroofed.
Alongside this, a further 190 properties will be fitted with external wall insulation and 1,400 properties will receive external works.
Lead Member for Housing, Cllr Ian Roberts said: “This is a massive spend and we are creating some wonderful homes for people to live in.”
Work will also continue on Wrexham Council hitting the Welsh Housing Quality Standard, with around £228m expected to be spent on the authority’s 11,300 housing stock in the next four years. Further sites for affordabale housing are also expected to be identified, with work on nine sites expected to begin this year.
Council Leader Mark Pritchard said: “These are extremely difficult times for all authorities. For us to spend £35m is fantastic news for Wrexham and our residents – I am delighted.”
The Council Executive Board will meet for this month’s meeting tomorrow 2pm. For those who can’t make the meeting it is anticipated that it will be webcast live on the Wrexham Council website.
