20,000 Food Caddies For Homes Across Wrexham
Food caddies are to distributed to thousands of households across Wrexham to ensure that everyone can have their food waste recycled on a weekly basis.
The Council have said a total of 20,000 households across the county borough will receive a ‘food waste recycling pack’ when distribution begins on August 15th.
The new food caddies feature as part of the ongoing review of Wrexham’s waste and recycling services – along with increasing recycling rates across the county.
As part of the review households will receive a food waste recycling pack including a kitchen caddy for use indoors, a lockable one for outdoor collection and a as the Council calls it a ‘complimentary’ roll of compostable bags.
There will also be a flyer which will explain how everyone can help to recycle more of their food waste.
The rollout will begin on Monday 15th August and should take two weeks to complete. Households can begin using their new lockable outdoor caddy from the 5th of September.
Speaking about the scheme Cllr David A Bithell, Lead Member for Environment and Transport, said: “We are doing everything we can to improve our service and increase recycling. We are grateful to (Waste and Resources Action Programme) WRAP for their help in ensuring we complete this review on time and with maximum benefit to households.
“We are committed to improving recycling rates and the only way we can do this is to ensure residents can recycle more.
“It is entirely down to their efforts that we have come as far as we have and I would like to thank everyone who has helped us exceed our targets to date.
“At the present time our recycling rate is 62% and the roll out of the food waste caddy will help us all recycle even more and reduce the waste that is placed in the general waste bins.”
It is also planned to deliver new boxes and bags in early autumn that residents will be able to use to recycle more items including plastic pots, tubs and trays and there will be a new kerbside textile collection service introduced.
Further details on when these changes come into effect will be available soon along with information on what can and can’t be recycled in the new service.
The distribution of the food caddies follows the introduction of the ‘Wheelie Boxes‘, which were introduced to 13,000 Wrexham homes earlier this year.
A fleet of 19 fuel efficient recycling vehicles are also operating in Wrexham, enabling a wider range of materials to be collected.
