£20 Million Towns Fund will breathe new life into Wrexham, says local MP
Twenty million pounds of UK Government funding will “help to breathe new life into the city”, according to Wrexham’s MP.
Last week it was announced that the city will receive £2 million per year for the next 10 years as part of the UK Government Towns Fund.
Wrexham is amongst 55 cities across England, Scotland, and Wales selected as part of a “long-term investment plan for towns that have been overlooked and taken for granted”.
Wrexham Council, will be responsible for delivering this fund by working with interested parties, with broad investment themes including: Safety and Security; High Street; Heritage; Regeneration; and Transport and Connectivity.
According to the UK Government “local people will be put in charge, and given the tools to change their town’s long-term future” via the ‘ten-year endowment-style fund’.
A ‘Town Board’ will be up to ‘bring together community leaders, employers and local authorities to deliver the Long-Term Plan for their town and put it to local people for consultation’.
The UK Government’s Levelling Up Department will work directly with Wrexham to make sure the investment delivers the local impact everyone wants to see.
Sarah Atherton MP said: “Another win for Wrexham. After months of lobbying the UK Government and the Levelling Up Secretary, I am delighted that our new city has been awarded £20 million from the Towns Fund.
“This significant Conservative Government investment breathes new life into our city which has been neglected for too long under Labour.
“I continue to champion Wrexham at every opportunity in Westminster and it is paying off.
“To date, we have received, £22.4 million from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, £521,644 from the Safer Streets Fund, and £13 million from round one of the Levelling Up Fund and now £20 million from the Towns Fund.
“To raise Wrexham even further, the Welsh Labour Government needs to support my calls for an Investment Zone.
“Instead of imposing a blanket 20mph speed limit and slashing Wrexham’s Fire Service, which falls under Welsh Labour’s control, the Welsh Government should recognise that Wrexham is primed for growth, and it’s time to accelerate, not decelerate.”
