A group of Scouts from North Wales are preparing for their trip to the World Scout Jamboree – with just 100 days until they jet off for the big event.

In total 4,000 teenagers and adults will be travelling from the United Kingdom to the event in Japan. They will be departing from nine UK airports, using 17 different airlines with transfers in far flung places such as Hong Kong, Dubai and Doha. Overall there will be 295 take offs and landings to get the excited bunch there and back.

The 23rd World Scout Jamboree is taking place in Kirara-hama, Yamaguchi prefecture from the 28th July to the 8th August and will see over 30,000 Scouts representing almost every country in the world come together for the most important Scout camp there is.

The 33 members of the North Wales Unit will be travelling from Manchester airport via Doha to Tokyo with Qatar Airways. One of the Scouts attending is 17 year old Chiara Edwards from Wrexham. Chiara said: “Usually the journey is the most prolonged part as you’re eager to reach your destination. When I discovered how we were getting to Japan it gave me something else to appreciate. The Scouts don’t cut corners on surprises or excitement!”

Unit Leader David Morris said: “One of the awesome things about Scouting is that it’s all run by volunteers, and Jamborees are no exception. Booking these flights was all done by one woman who, as well as being a volunteer with the Scouts, happens to be a travel agent. The amount of her spare time she has given to make sure we all get to Japan is just amazing!”
