Hundreds of schoolchildren from Wrexham have been producing works of art which celebrate some of science’s greatest females to coincide with International Women’s Day 2012.

The She Inspired comics competition has seen pupils research some of the world’s greatest female scientists past and present – and then bring their stories to life in the form of comic strips.

Inspired by their own educational comic, Clockwork Express, Glyndŵr University students Heather Wilson, Taryn Whitham and Charlie Shephard, organised the initiative with support from the Arts Council for Wales and Techniquest Glyndwr.

The competition was launched in November 2011 with the aim of helping to generate an interest in the sciences amongst children and provide positive female role models to help boost the career aspirations of young girls.

Heather, who has been visiting schools to meet the children taking part, said: “I feel really lucky to have been able share Clockwork Express with such attentive and creative children. I can’t give them enough praise for their enthusiasm and I hope they all had as much fun as I did.”

The winning entries will be announced today to coincide with International Women’s Day.

They will then go on public display at Techniquest Glyndŵr from Friday 9 to Saturday 31 March 2012. Winners will also see their work published in a special edition of Clockwork Express, copies of which will be awarded to their schools.

Clockwork Express follows the fantastical adventures of Professor Lilian Primrose and her trusty sidekick Tweet as they journey through time meeting notable women from history, getting in and out of trouble and learning along the way.

The exhibition will be open to anyone visiting Techniquest Glyndwr and on select dates throughout March visitors will have the chance to meet the artists themselves and try their hand at making their own comic creations.
