Glyndŵr University is bucking a national trend of declining university applications after revealing its applications are up 7% from this time last year.

University admissions service UCAS reported that the number of students applying to study undergraduate courses at universities across Wales are down 9.3% compared to early January 2011.

Glyndwr chancellors have attributed the success to the differential fees which the university offers at a time when other universities have raised fees to the maximum of £9,000.

Professor Helen James, Pro Vice-Chancellor at Glyndŵr University, said: “Applications for full-time undergraduate programmes at Glyndŵr University are currently 7% up on the same date last year.

“It would appear that we are bucking the national trend, with the majority of English and Welsh universities reporting reduced UCAS applications for courses starting in 2012.

“Glyndŵr University is applying differential fee levels for its courses in recognition of the need to avoid, as far as possible, burdening students with large debt when they leave university. Our average fee level is below the maximum fee level charged by institutions and may account in part for the increased interest in our courses.

“However, many of Glyndŵr University’s courses are professionally and vocationally aligned and have an excellent record in terms of graduate employability. This may also be a key factor behind our success in attracting potential students.

“Courses in areas such as computing, early childhood studies, television and the creative industries are recruiting well, as are nursing and social work, which have received very high numbers of applications. We are expecting additional applications for all courses over the next few weeks and hope to accommodate as many applicants as possible.”
