One hundred years ago this weekend, the men of the 1st Bn The Royal Welch Fusiliers were recovering from their first taste of action in the trenches in Flanders. Badly mauled over the period 19-22 Oct 1914 at Zonnebeke, they were now in reserve.
Within a few days, they would go back up the line and this time face almost total destruction. Many of these men who fought and some who died came from the town and surrounding villages.
