Plaid Cymru has called on Wrexham Council to restrict access to ‘Payday Loan’ websites from public access computers, redirecting any traffic to the North Wales Credit Union website instead.

    It poses some interesting questions:
    – Should the Council be responsible for public internet use?
    – Should the Council redirect certain requests or traffic?
    – If so, what is the criteria? eg. Payday Loan sites.

However well intentioned, the state (at any level) cannot control what is free communication i.e. freedom of speech and free trade.

Resolving this must rest in another solution.

The Government should bring in legislation to stop these companies charging enormous interest rates , in excess of 5000%. They have talked about it but as yet have not acted.
It could even be retrospective and make them reduce all existing loans to a reasonable rate.

Remember there are nationally known companies that still loan and collect weekly on the doorstep, encouraging people to take on a little bit more debt as they nearly pay off the existing debt.

you’d be surprised what the council already bans.

why are some social media & email sites banned on public access computers but not payday loan ones?

The financial authorities and government should be doing more about this part of the financial industry.. it’s bad for the economy and tax revenue.
