BenjaminMParticipant“Thank you for your input AVOW99, good to get some clarification from the horses mouth, so to speak.”
I would wholeheartedly agree if theory equated to practice. After reading the advice given by AVOW99, I once again checked leading supermarket web sites and every one made reference that Wales had not finalised providing the necessary information.
If Wales had joined forces with the England initiative, problems would have been resolved a lot sooner. I KNOW that many people in Wales are having similar problems in accessing priority slots.
The Welsh Assembly have fallen short by attempting to offload responsibility to a local level.
Not just me saying it, a letter was sent to the First Minister from all Welsh MP’s telling him to get it sorted.

AVOW99ParticipantBenjamin – the information I have provided has come from the Welsh Government briefing I received Thursday afternoon and on whuch AVOW bases its advice to people who ring for assistance. If this has not filtered yet to the Supermarket online order service I will take up the issue.
Q How will I get food if I’m shielding?
If you do not have any support from family, friends, neighbours or support groups close by who can help you while you are shielding, you will be able to request a free weekly food box delivery. Each food box will contain enough food for one person shielding for a week – if two people in a household are shielding, you will be able to request two boxes.
To request a free weekly food box, please call the special number for your local authority, which is contained in the letter you received from the Chief Medical Officer to request a food box.
All major supermarkets in Wales have offered to provide priority delivery to people who have received a shielding letter. Data has been shared with them to enable them to identify this if and when you place an order online.April 12, 2020 at 8:51 pm #184264
AnonymousInactiveThe Speaking Truth, You make a very good point, another example of “free enterprise” expecting to be bailed out via “socialism” ie public money.

JaneJParticipantYou are missing a fundamental commercial consideration- why on earth would any private enterprise that relies on funding from the public sector and individuals to pay for residents not protect their staff and residents if they could. Look at the care homes that have had deaths in them – not just one or two but 10+ in some cases. Would any business want that as a track record – of course not.
The problem with PPE is the actual supply chain – most of which comes from China has been totally disrupted plus a worldwide demand and the sheer volume demand from all those countries ahead of Britain are grabbing what they can- most PPE is one off use and throw away so needs replenishing all the time – but where from – the UK capacity for making these items is approx. 10% of the total demand.
I do not believe for one minute that as implied private care homes are profiteering on this quite the opposite. Do you think they can easily fill a bed vacated by someone who has died of COVID. Very unlikely so the bed that you assume will make the profits for the company has a zero income. I think you need to rethink your view about profiteering and point your comments at politicians to get the supply chains sorted so the Care Sector can buy what is needed.
What will we do in this country if lots of care homes had to close where would the residents go then – hospitals , I think not!

The Speaking TruthParticipantNot talking about making profit from Covid 19. I’m taking in general, care homes scalp enough money in normal times. Now they’re making out like it’s the government’s fault the staff don’t have PPE and can’t jump in on the NHS shopping hour. I say to these corporations put your money where your mouth is! Want socialism but capitalise in a crisis.. disgrace

wrexviewParticipantThink the problem is more to do with sourcing PPE than arguing about who is going to pay for it. Maybe if the health authority gets a delivery some of the locally produced help could be directed to care homes and care workers. Every case of Covid 19 prevented equals less pressure on our NHS beds.

MargaretAParticipantOh dear, oh dear! So much misunderstanding! Some care homes in Wales cannot get PPE, because their suppliers based in England are keeping all their stock for NHS England. There is a huge shortage and the virus has highlighted the foolishness in not being more self reliant in Britain.
We are in the vulnerable group. Last week we received a message from Sainsbury’s that we would be able to access a slot. We went on line on Tuesday and received our delivery on Thursday.
Wrexham has had the volunteer service up and running for some time. It may not be perfect, but it is there. Today Radio 4 broadcast an item about the volunteer army in England which is only just starting to work. Wales decided to go down the local route and that seems to be working.
Stay safe.April 14, 2020 at 11:51 am #184311
SheefagParticipantIt’s time to bring back Gypsy Jean.
You used to be able to find anything on there.

TheresaParticipantWhat’s the point in providing PPE for careworkers, when those same careworkers have got their neighbours, family and friends around at their house for beers for a nice little get together?
